Man Utd and Chelsea setback as insiders 'adamant' Erling Haaland will join Bayern Munich
ERLING HAALAND has been linked with a move to the Premier League. Manchester United and Chelsea have suffered a transfer setback with reports suggesting that people inside German football are ‘adamant’ that Erling Haaland will sign for Bayern Munich. The Borussia Dortmund star has been linked with several of the biggest clubs in Europe over the last year.
Dortmund managed to keep hold of the star striker in the summer transfer window but might not be so lucky in 2022.
Haaland has maintained a record of a goal per game across his 53 Bundesliga appearances, alerting the attention of the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern. But Man Utd and Chelsea have also been linked. The two Premier League clubs could look to bolster their forward options next summer. Both made marquee striker signings in the previous transfer window. United sealed the incredible return of Cristiano Ronaldo while Chelsea secured the £97.5million acquisition of Romelu Lukaku.
However, they could still enter the race to sign Haaland, especially as the Norwegian is widely reported as having a lower release clause in the region of £65m that becomes active next summer. Their pursuit, though, might have received a fresh setback. According to the Independent, sources inside the German game are ‘adamant’ that Haaland will make the switch to Dortmund’s Bundesliga rivals Bayern.
The 21-year-old would likely be the long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker made clear in the summer that he would like to seek a fresh challenge but remained at the Allianz Arena.
Earlier this week, Lewandowski equalled Gerd Muller’s record for most Bundesliga goals in a calendar year, scoring his 42nd of 2021 in the 5-0 win over Stuttgart.
Dortmund are keen to keep Haaland but recognise that it will be quite a challenge with so many clubs interested.
CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke believes the former RB Salzburg star’s development would be better served by staying.
Watzke said: “Erling feels completely at home here, you get that feeling. But otherwise, I always tend not to conduct talks with a player through the media. “We will conduct the talks in an orderly manner and would like him to stay with us for longer. “But if at the end of the day that’s not the case, we will accept that. And we will find solutions again. That’s also absolutely clear. That’s in the DNA of BVB. “But it would be great for his development if he stayed with us a little longer.”
