Fabrizio Romano has potentially handed West Ham a big boost in pursuit of Everton defender Lucas Digne – by ruling Newcastle out of the running. Newcastle, West Ham and Chelsea had all been linked with the Everton ace.

Digne, 28, has not featured for Rafa Benitez’s side since the Merseyside derby on December 1. A behind-the-scenes fall out has seen the France international drop out of the squad, only returning against Brighton.

He remained an unused substitute, though. It is clear that £119,000-a-week (Spotrac) Digne is looking for a new challenge – and remaining in the Premier League is a possibility. He has a contract until June 2025.

Sky Sports report that Newcastle, West Ham and Chelsea all want Digne – with an asking price of £30million set. But Romano has delivered an update in Newcastle’s pursuit, ruling them out, which could help the Hammers.

ROMANO ON DIGNE: WITH NEWCASTLE OUT, EVERTON OR CHELSEA?

Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Marcos Alonso has since covered the England international but Chelsea are likely to want to bring in a left-back.LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 17: Lucas Digne of Everton reacts during the Premier League match between Everton and West Ham United at Goodison Park on October 17, 2021 in Liverpool, England. However, Digne will be well aware that when Chilwell returns, he could easily drop to the bench. At West Ham, a club challenging for the top four and above West Ham, Digne would easily start week in, week out.

It might just be that Digne could prefer a move to the Hammers under David Moyes. Whether the east London side can convince Digne to ignore the lure of Chelsea, remains to be seen.
