Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea contract details emerge as new boss given Champions League task

Chelsea announced Thomas Tuchel as their new manager last week after sacking Frank Lampard following a poor run of form which left them outside the Premier League top four. Roman Abramovich has wasted no time in setting Tuchel a new challenge, and is eyeing immediate success it seems once again.

The contract details of new Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel have emerged, and it appears the German has been tasked with a serious Champions League challenge.

Tuchel succeeded Frank Lampard last week after the Blues legend was given the boot following a poor run of form.

Surprisingly, the former PSG manager was only handed an 18 month deal, perhaps to avoid a huge payoff if Roman Abramovich decides to give him the sack too.

But the Daily Mail claim that there is a clause that will see him handed an extension based on his performance over the next season and a half.

Thomas Tuchel has been given a tough challenge for the Champions League

It is understood that if Tuchel secures Champions League football over the next two seasons, he will be kept on by the Stamford Bridge.

The report also claims there are several other incentives for Tuchel to succeed, but does not go into more detail.

The 47-year-old has admitted that he was initially unhappy to only receive an 18 month contract.

Frank Lampard was given the sack last week

However, Tuchel insists that football is a cut-throat industry, and knows Chelsea would sack him regardless of his deal if he was not getting the right results.

“At first it was a concern, I was a little like, ‘Oh, why 18 months?’” revealed Tuchel.

“But after only one minute I thought, ‘What does it change? What does it change if they give me four and a half years? They could sack me anyway.’

“If they are not happy with me, they will sack me anyway. And if they gave me four and a half years they would put in a clause that when they sack me, they’ll pay me.”

The Mail also claim that Tuchel was unsure about joining Chelsea midway through the season.

The club started talks with last season’s Champions League finalist before Lampard had been given the sack.

But after being told that there was no guarantee the job would be available at the end of this season, Tuchel accepted the post, seemingly promoting Abramovich to show Lampard the exit door.

He has got off to a decent start in the Blues hotseat, drawing with Wolves in his first game in charge, before beating Burnley 2-0 over the weekend.
